Brushing Routine

Brush 3-4 times weekly with a wide-toothed comb or long-pin slicker brush, working through the thick, curly, woolly coat section by section. Always mist with water before combing to prevent curl breakage. The coat mats quickly, especially behind the ears, in the armpits, and on the belly. A dematting comb helps with any tangles found.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 2-3 weeks with a hydrating, curl-defining shampoo followed by a rich conditioner. The Barbet's coat absorbs water like a sponge, so be prepared for extended drying time. Squeeze (never rub) water out with towels, then diffuse-dry on low heat or air-dry. The coat should form defined, loose curls.

Common Issues

• Rapid matting in the dense, woolly coat -- can mat overnight if damp
• Ear infections from heavy ear furnishings trapping moisture
• Debris and burrs embedding in the curly coat during outdoor activity
• Coat odor from the woolly texture retaining moisture and oils

Extend Your Grooming Results

Comb through the entire coat at least every other day during humid months. Trim facial hair to keep eyes clear. Pluck ear hair monthly and clean ears twice weekly. After any water activity, dry the coat completely -- a damp Barbet coat will mat within hours. Keep the coat at 3-4 inches maximum between clips.

Seasonal Care

Barbets do not shed seasonally since their coat grows continuously. In Houston's humid summers, the woolly coat retains moisture and can develop odor -- clip shorter and increase bathing frequency. The coat actually provides insulation from heat, so maintain at least 1 inch. In winter, the coat can be kept longer for warmth.

Maintenance Schedule

Brush 3-4 times weekly minimum, ear cleaning twice weekly, ear hair plucking monthly, facial trimming as needed, full clip every 2-3 months, bath every 2-3 weeks, professional grooming every 4-6 weeks.
