Brushing Routine

Brush daily or at minimum 4-5 times per week with a pin brush, slicker brush, and metal comb to maintain their long, abundant double coat. The mahogany-colored outer coat is straight and moderately harsh. Use line brushing technique through the heavy mane, chest frill, and leg feathering. Focus special attention on behind the ears, under the collar, and in the groin.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 4-6 weeks with a gentle, color-enhancing shampoo that preserves the rich mahogany tones. Follow with a light conditioner on the feathering and mane. Always detangle completely before bathing. Blow dry thoroughly with a high-velocity dryer while brushing to prevent matting and achieve the proper full coat profile.

• Matting in mane, behind ears, and leg feathering
• Color fading from sun exposure
• Heavy seasonal shedding
• Hot spots from moisture trapped in undercoat
• Allergic dermatitis

Extend Your Grooming Results

Daily attention to the three critical mat zones (behind ears, armpits, groin) prevents serious tangles. Use a leave-in conditioning spray when brushing to protect the coat and enhance the mahogany color. Keep sanitary areas trimmed for hygiene. Trim paw pad hair for traction and cleanliness.

Seasonal Care

Tervurens shed their undercoat heavily twice a year, with females often blowing coat after heat cycles. Daily brushing with an undercoat rake is mandatory during these periods. Summer care may involve thinning the undercoat for comfort in heat. The winter coat reaches its fullest, most impressive state with the dramatic mane and frill.
