Brushing Routine

Morkies (Maltese x Yorkshire Terrier) have a fine, silky, single-layer coat that can range from the Maltese's pure white flowing coat to the Yorkie's fine steel-blue and tan hair. Daily brushing is essential with a pin brush, working gently through the fine coat to prevent breakage. Follow with a fine-tooth comb, paying special attention to behind the ears, under the armpits, and where harnesses create friction. The coat tangles rapidly and rough brushing causes damage.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 2-3 weeks with a gentle, brightening shampoo for lighter-colored Morkies or a silk-enhancing formula for darker coats. Use a lightweight detangling conditioner and comb through while wet for easiest tangle removal. Rinse extremely thoroughly as residue causes the fine coat to appear dull and greasy. Blow-dry on low heat with a pin brush to prevent tangles from setting as the hair dries.

Common Issues

• Severe tear staining, especially in Morkies with lighter facial coloring
• Coat breakage from rough brushing or friction from collars and harnesses
• Dental disease risk extremely high in this combination of tiny breeds
• Hypoglycemia sensitivity in very small individuals -- watch for signs during grooming
• Skin dryness and flaking from over-bathing the fine coat

Extend Your Grooming Results

Switch to a harness instead of a collar to prevent coat breakage and matting around the neck. Apply a leave-in silk conditioner daily to protect the fine hair. Clean tear stains with a pet-safe wipe at least once daily for lighter-colored Morkies. Keep the coat trimmed to a manageable length if daily brushing is challenging -- a puppy cut reduces maintenance while keeping the Morkie looking adorable. Use a silk pillowcase or satin bed liner to reduce friction-based tangles.

Seasonal Care

Morkies shed very little year-round, making them a consistent grooming commitment across all seasons. In summer, a shorter trim keeps the dog comfortable and reduces the risk of heat-related skin issues. In winter, the fine coat provides little insulation -- Morkies need a sweater or coat for outdoor activities and extra moisturizing treatments to combat dry indoor air. Seasonal allergies may increase tear staining and skin sensitivity.

Maintenance Schedule

Professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Daily brushing with pin brush and fine comb. Tear stain cleaning daily. Dental care daily if possible, minimum 4 times weekly. Ear cleaning weekly. Nail trims every 2-3 weeks. Topknot or face trim as needed.
