Brushing Routine

Brush every other day with a slicker brush and metal comb for the curly coat type, or a pin brush for the wavy coat type. The non-shedding coat grows continuously and mats quickly without regular attention. Work methodically in sections from the skin outward. Use a detangling spray for any small tangles before they become mats.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 3-4 weeks using a moisturizing shampoo formulated for curly or wavy coats. Apply a hydrating conditioner and leave on for 3-5 minutes to maintain curl definition and prevent dryness. The curly coat type needs more conditioning than the wavy type. Dry with a low-heat dryer while fluffing to maintain proper coat texture.

Seasonal Care

Portuguese Water Dogs do not shed seasonally, but their continuously growing coat requires consistent year-round grooming. In Houston summers, a shorter clip (1-2 inches) reduces heat burden and drying time after their frequent swims. In winter, a longer coat provides warmth but demands more brushing commitment.
