Brushing Routine

Brush thoroughly 3-4 times per week using a pin brush and undercoat rake. The profuse, stand-off double coat requires section-by-section brushing from the skin outward. Use a long-tooth metal comb to check for hidden mats in the dense undercoat, especially around the ruff, behind ears, rear legs, and under the tail.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 4-6 weeks using a whitening or brightening shampoo to maintain the brilliant white coat. Apply a heavy conditioner and allow it to soak for 5-10 minutes to penetrate the dense undercoat. This breed requires 60-90 minutes of high-velocity drying. An incompletely dried Samoyed coat will mat and can develop mildew.

• Coat yellowing and staining (especially around mouth and paws)
• Insufficient drying leading to mildew smell and hot spots

Use a whitening spray on stained areas between baths. The Samoyed coat is naturally dirt-repelling when properly maintained, so focus maintenance on undercoat removal rather than frequent bathing. Brush in 10-minute daily sessions rather than one long weekly session. Apply a light anti-static spray in dry conditions.

Seasonal Care

Samoyeds blow their entire undercoat 1-2 times per year in a dramatic shedding event. Daily raking is essential during the 2-4 week blow period. In Houston's heat, professional de-shedding services every 4 weeks during summer are recommended. Never shave a Samoyed as the double coat protects against both heat and sunburn.
