Brushing Routine

Brush the Tibetan Spaniel's silky double coat 2-3 times weekly with a pin brush and medium-tooth comb. The coat is moderately long with a smooth flat-lying body coat, longer feathering on the ears, legs, and plumed tail, and a distinctive mane around the neck. Focus brushing on the ear feathering, leg pants, and neck mane where mats form. A slicker brush works for the finer areas behind the ears.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 6-8 weeks with a gentle shampoo and light conditioner. The silky coat is relatively self-maintaining and over-bathing strips natural oils. Pay attention to the ear feathering during washing, combing through while conditioner is applied. Blow-dry on low heat while brushing the coat smooth and fluffing the mane.

• Ear feathering tangling and matting
• Mane mats around collar area
• Tear staining on lighter faces
• Leg feathering collecting debris during walks
• Cherry eye requiring gentle handling around face

Extend Your Grooming Results

A silk protein spray on the feathering after grooming keeps it smooth and tangle-resistant. Remove the collar at home when possible to prevent mane mats. Between grooms, comb through ear feathering and check behind ears daily. A light detangling spray before walks prevents debris from sticking to leg feathering.

Seasonal Care

Sheds the undercoat moderately in spring and fall. During shedding periods, increase brushing to daily with an undercoat rake. In summer, the coat provides sun protection but the undercoat should be thinned for Houston's heat. In winter, the mane and undercoat thicken naturally for insulation.

Maintenance Schedule

Brush 2-3 times weekly, daily during shedding. Comb ear feathering every other day. Clean eyes and face daily. Clean ears weekly. Trim nails every 2-3 weeks. Professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.
