Brushing Routine

Brush daily or at minimum 4-5 times per week with a slicker brush and undercoat rake to manage their thick, medium-long double coat. Use a long-toothed metal comb through the mane, chest feathering, and leg furnishings where mats form quickly. Pay particular attention to behind the ears, under the armpits, and around the collar area.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 6-8 weeks with a moisturizing shampoo formulated for double-coated breeds, followed by a detangling conditioner. Their dense coat requires thorough saturation and extended rinsing to remove all product. A high-velocity dryer is essential as this coat can retain moisture for extended periods.

• Matting in mane, armpits, and behind ears
• Hot spots from moisture trapped in undercoat
• Excessive shedding creating household management challenges
• Ear infections from heavy, pendulous ears
• Webbed feet collecting debris between toes

Extend Your Grooming Results

Use a detangling spray daily when brushing to reduce coat breakage and ease mat removal. Keep the hair between the paw pads trimmed to prevent debris collection and slipping. Trim sanitary areas regularly to maintain hygiene. A weekly deep-combing session prevents small tangles from becoming serious mats.

Seasonal Care

Heavy seasonal shedding twice a year in spring and fall, with females often blowing coat after heat cycles as well. Daily brushing with an undercoat rake is mandatory during these periods. In summer, ensure the undercoat is thinned to prevent overheating. Never shave a Leonberger as their double coat regulates temperature.
