Brushing Routine

Brush 2-3 times per week with a slicker brush on the body and a comb through the beard, eyebrows, and leg furnishings. The wiry topcoat requires different care than the soft undercoat. Use a stripping knife or comb if maintaining a hand-stripped coat for show, or a slicker brush for clipped pet coats.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 4-6 weeks using a shampoo formulated for wiry or terrier coats. For hand-stripped coats, use a texturizing shampoo to maintain the coarse texture. Wash the beard separately with each bath, as it collects food and water stains. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a medium-heat dryer.

• Beard staining from food, water, and saliva
• Schnauzer comedone syndrome (blackheads along the back)
• Ear hair growth requiring regular plucking
• Leg furnishing mats from snow, mud, or debris

Extend Your Grooming Results

The beard is the high-maintenance area between grooms. Wipe it after every meal and water session to prevent staining and odor. Comb the beard and leg furnishings every other day to prevent tangles. A quick wipe along the back with a medicated pad can help manage Schnauzer bumps between grooms.

Seasonal Care

Miniature Schnauzers are low-shedding dogs, but hand-stripped coats need stripping every 8-12 weeks to maintain proper texture. In summer, the furnishings can be kept shorter for easier maintenance. In winter, the wiry coat provides decent insulation. Beard care is year-round and is the most demanding part of Schnauzer maintenance.
