Brushing Routine

Brush 2-3 times per week with a slicker brush, working through the abundant double coat in sections. Use an undercoat rake gently through the dense undercoat, especially around the chest ruff, behind the ears, and on the hind legs. A pin brush works well for the outer coat finishing. Be gentle, as rough brushing can damage the delicate topcoat.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 4-6 weeks using a volumizing shampoo to maintain the signature fluffy appearance. Apply a lightweight conditioner to the undercoat. Dry completely with a high-velocity dryer on a moderate setting, fluff-drying with a slicker brush to achieve maximum volume. The double coat holds moisture, so thorough drying is essential.

Common Issues

• Alopecia X (black skin disease) causing coat loss
• Matting in the dense undercoat behind ears and on the chest ruff
• Tear staining on lighter-colored Poms
• Dental disease extremely common in the breed
• Patellar luxation making standing positions during grooming uncomfortable

Extend Your Grooming Results

Maintain the fluffy Pom silhouette between grooms by brushing against the coat growth to lift and separate. A light volumizing spray before brushing adds body. Trim the foot pads and sanitary area at home between grooms if comfortable. Never shave a Pomeranian, as the coat may not grow back properly and the breed is prone to post-clipping alopecia.

Seasonal Care

Pomeranians shed their undercoat in spring and fall, with a particularly heavy shed in spring. Females may also blow coat after heat cycles. In Houston summers, keeping the undercoat raked out helps with heat management. Never shave for summer. Winter coats fill in beautifully and require regular brushing to prevent matting.

Maintenance Schedule

Professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. Brush 2-3 times weekly, daily during shedding season. Face wiping for tear stains every 1-2 days. Dental care as recommended. Nail trims every 2-3 weeks.
