Brushing Routine

Puggles (Pug x Beagle) have a short, dense, double coat that is relatively low-maintenance but sheds more than many owners expect. Brush 2-3 times per week with a rubber curry brush or grooming mitt to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils. A bristle brush works well for finishing. Despite the short coat, regular brushing significantly reduces the amount of hair around the home and keeps the coat healthy and shiny.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 6-8 weeks unless particularly dirty or smelly. Use a mild, hypoallergenic shampoo as both parent breeds can have sensitive skin. A deshedding shampoo and conditioner helps manage the constant low-level shedding. Dry thoroughly with a towel and low-heat dryer, paying attention to facial folds inherited from the Pug side. Ensure all wrinkles are completely dry to prevent bacterial and yeast growth.

Extend Your Grooming Results

Clean facial folds daily with a pet-safe wipe and apply a thin layer of cornstarch or fold balm to keep them dry. Use a rubber curry brush or grooming glove during petting sessions to manage shedding without formal grooming sessions. Keep the ear flaps clean and dry, especially after water exposure. Maintain a healthy weight to reduce skin fold severity and overall skin health. Use a deshedding spray weekly between baths.

Seasonal Care

Puggles shed moderately year-round with noticeable increases in spring and fall as the double coat transitions. During these periods, increase brushing to daily with a deshedding tool. In summer, be aware that Puggles with flatter Pug-like faces have brachycephalic breathing concerns in heat -- keep grooming sessions cool and brief. In winter, the coat thickens slightly and shedding decreases but does not stop.

Maintenance Schedule
